Ladies Team Wales Shore Trials 2009

Information Guide

Following our disappointing results at the World Internationals in 2006 and the poor attendance at the shore trials I have discussed the selection process with senior members of the WFSA and have made the following changes:-

1. A Team comprising of 6 anglers will be chosen from the attending anglers at the shore trials.

2. These 6 anglers will be chosen on their results during the fishing matches, bait presentation, casting ability, match fishing skills, watercraft skills, the ability to work as part of a team and the willingness to take part in tuition sessions on any of the above points.

3. The Team of 6 anglers will travel to the World Championships and possibly the Home Internationals in 2007. The Team will be then be selected at the Managers discretion on a daily basis from the Team of 6 anglers.

4. Each day, from the Team of 6 anglers, 5 anglers will be chosen to fish the match and the remaining angler will be expected to walk the beach with the Team Manager or Assistant Manager to support the Team.

Once the Team for 2007 has been selected all members will be expected to:-

A. Run and participate in fundraising events for the Team

B. Attend Team meetings and practice events.

C. Attend tuition events such as casting etc.

D. Purchase Team clothing to be worn during the Championships - unless sponsorship for this can be found.

E. Adhere to the Code of Conduct for International Anglers which is currently under review and will be issued to all the selected Team members at a later date.

World Internationals 2006 - Portugal

The 2006 Team consisted of:-

Team Manager & Member - Helen Pearce, Aberystwyth

Team Captain - Tina Lustig, Pembroke

Team Member - Mair Owen, Aberystwyth

Team Member - Diane Jones, St Asaph

Team Member - June Howell, Cardiff

Training Day

This day saw only 2 team members catching fish - Mair Owen with a nice mullet and Helen Pearce with 2 undersize weavers. A disappointing day but served its purpose with regards to rig testing.

1st Competition Day

A very disappointing day with only one angler Diane Jones catching 2 mullet. 27 anglers blanked with 2 of the zones only producing fish for 5 anglers. Team position was 8th place.

2nd Competition Day

A better day for us with 3 out of 4 anglers catching fish - Diane Jones with 2 mullet, Helen Pearce with 2 sole and Tina Lustig with a sole and a mullet. Mair Owen was unable to fish because of an upset stomach. The Team finished the day in 7th place.

3rd Competiton Day

A very poor days fishing for all the teams with a huge amounts of weed all along the beach. Out of the total of 50 anglers only 12 managed to catch. Mair Owen weighed in a bream and the Team slid to 9th place.

4th Competition Day

The final day was again disappointing with only 2 anglers weighing in fish - June Howell with a garfish and Helen Pearce with 2 sole. Again there were a large number of blanks - 24 in total. The final Team position remained in 9th place.

Final Team Positions:-

1st - Portugal

2nd - Holland

3rd - Croatia

4th - Italy

5th - Brazil

6th - Spain

7th - South Africa

8th - Germany

9th - Wales

10th - France

Overall a very disappointing performance which has prompted me to change the Team Selection Process. These changes have been implemented for this years qualifier sessions and will hopefully improve the characteristics and skills of the Team.
