The South West Region held their first match of 2010 on 14th February at Pendine.

With a slight northerly breeze coming from behind and the sun shinning brightly straight into your face, it turned out to be a chilli but calm day which isn’t normally the best conditions for this venue.
With a total of 20 anglers, 18 seniors (which included 1lady) and 2 juniors, it was great to see new faces and more clubs participating in the region matches. Alas due to the conditions the fish were not there in force which meant that there was only 18 fish brought to the scales, the majority of which were flounder and a few shore rockling. Although there were plenty of pin head whiting being washed onto the beach; this kept some anglers amused while the fishing was so slow.

The winning positions are as follows:
1st went to Dr John O’Conner representing Ospreys SAC, with a fish count of 5 flounder and a total bag weight of 1.540kgs

2nd went to Mr Ray Collyer representing the P.M.s, with a fish count of 2 flounder and a total bag weight of 1.100kgs

3rd was a joint position between Mr Vic Pearce representing the P.M.s, fish count of 1 flounder and a bag weight of 0.440kgs and Mr Dave Gledhill representing Ospreys SAC, fish count of 2 flounder and 1 shore rockling and also a bag weight of 0.440kgs

Top Lady went to Mrs Eileen Tattersall representing the P.M.s, with a flounder and a bag weight of 0.460kgs

Top Junior went to Ms Kieran Davies representing Tumble SAC, a fish count of 2 flounder and a bag weight of 0.460kgs. (This was his first attempt at competition level)

Heaviest Fish went to Mr Ray Collyer for a flounder weighing 0.680kgs

Match Report 17th Jan 2010.

Pembrokeshire s.a.c held its first competition of 2010 on sunday 17th jan. The venue chosen was a Haven rover which meant fishing was allowed anywhere within the Milford Haven waterway, fishing between 2pm and 9pm. The weather was favourable compared to the previous couple of weeks with light westerly winds and a clear sky, with booking and weighing in a gelliswick beach, Most anglers decided to try out South Hook ledges, after hearing favourable reports over previous few weeks of some large fish being landedand seemingly plenty of species showing. The fishing was best described as patchy, with fish either showing for all anglers, or long spells with not as much as a bite for anyone present. A heavy swell of up to 20ft at times made fishing rather awkward, and as the tide approached high water reduced the area for anglers to fish, as they were forced higher up the rocks.
Species caught were ls dogfish, outing, whiting, codling, rockling, bull huss and conger eel. I say conger eel, but they weren't to be for some anglers(sorry rob). Only those tha managed to keep hld of them. I guess it's true what we all say " you should have seen the one I lost" and "the one that got away"!!! Although Rob's conger was undoubtedly the largest fish of the day and the fact it was totally out of the water, If it does not get to the scales it does not count. Not to worry, better luck next time oh and stronger snoods.

Results as follows:

1st - Tony Lewis
2nd - Gavin Forsyth
3rd- Rob Barrett

H/fish won joinly by Gavin and Rob

All anglers competing returned fish.

Next competition at Pendiene beach on the 14th Feb fishing 11am - 4 pm.
This competition fishe in conjuction with W.F.S.A South West region and a good club turnout will be appreciated.

All individual angling results are not given in keeping with club policy.

Match Report

The day started with excellent conditions; sunny & quite warm for the time of year and with a slight breeze coming from a north westerly direction across the length of the beach. With free refreshments on site courtesy of the master fryer from Carmarthen, the atmosphere during the book in was full of banter and excitement. For some anglers it was a bit of a slog through all the soft mud but this proved to be an ideal area to fish at this venue. With 47 seniors, 4 female anglers and 7 junior anglers the competition was set to be a great event. The bass sadly proved to be very elusive but with 138 flounders caught on the day, it turned out to be a very successful match, with the majority of fish being returned back into the estuary and some anglers taking their catch home for tea.

Champion angler with a total weight of 4.740kg and a fish count of 11 flounders, went to Carwyn Walters from Tumble Angling Club. 2nd place with a total weight of 4.020kg and also with a fish count of 11 flounder, went to Daniel Beard from Carmarthen S.A.C. 3RD place with a total weight of 3.040kg and a fish count of 7 flounders went to Martin Collyer also from Tumble Angling Club. 4th place with a total weight of 2.600kg and a fish count of 6 flounders, went to Myrddin Davies from the Pembrokeshire P.Ms. 5th place with a total weight of 2.200kg and also with a fish count of 6 flounders, went to Gavin Forsyth who entered as an open contender. Top female angler with a total weight of 0.800kg and a fish count of 3 flounders, went to Ruth Morgan from Carmarthen S.A.C. Top junior angler with a total weight of 4.420kg and a fish count of 9 flounders, went to Carwyn Wheeler who entered as an open contender. The seniors heaviest fish pool went to Vic Pearce of the Carmarthenshire P.Ms with a flounder of 0.660kg.

It was a very well turned out event with regular faces and new competitors attending. Its great to see the support from all the clubs and its great to see the number of anglers increase on last years event. The committee would like to use this opportunity to give a huge thank you to all that attended. To end this report, I would like to say that the "man of the match"(if there was such a thing in angling),would have to go to Carwyn Wheeler. To be so young and to show so much talent and enjoyment of the sport; credit must be given to him and to those who have taught him. Look out for him in the future, he is in a class of his own!!

Hope to see you all again during future matches, especially the 2010 Fur & Feather open.

WFSA West Region

Report for Executive meeting 15th November 2008

The West Region is beginning to now take shape with two new clubs being affiliated - a casting club which is primarily a coaching club rather than a purely tournament casting club and a new project for the area - the Ceredigion Angling Coaching Project. The project is targeting schools, youth offending teams, young carers, youth groups, and the disabled and offering angling coaching mainly aimed at young people in the first year. The project offers local youngsters the chance to learn how to fish and gives them an alternative to the team sports currently on offer in the area. The project is working with the council to get a permanent base, initially a porta-cabin with the aim of building a permanent base in the next year to 18 months. This will give us a classroom facility, office space and storage. In coming years the project will then widen its remit to adults and be able to offer coaching for people who have never fished before up to more specialized aspects of the sport, we also hope to be able to combine with other angling disciplines so the facilities are used to their full potential. The project has a development plan and is currently seeking funding to support this.

The region has negotiated a joint membership scheme between two local clubs the shore club and boat club. This gives members the opportunity of becoming a member of both clubs at a reduced cost which will allow more events to be held in the region for club members to enjoy and will boost membership.

Coaching within the region has really taken off with the first event being during National Fishing Week where youngsters and adults came along for a day to try out fishing at Llanrhystud. We now have two new Sea Angler magazine casting instructors in the region and three new FWA Level 1 coaches. We are currently waiting for three more coaches to go on courses which will mean we will be able to offer more events in the region and help out in other areas.

The region has also been working together with the local Fisheries Officer and we have secured one prosecution so far for illegal sea trout in a net and a net with an illegal mesh size. The Fisheries Officers are now regularly patrolling the coastline from Cardigan to the north of our region and they have been pulling nets and pots to check for any irregularities. They are also working with us to provide talks to youngsters and club members and have provided minimum size limit posters which have been put up in popular fishing spots. They have also given us booklets, information sheets and posters for us to put into our club membership packs.

In the next few months we will be starting a Pairs League in the region and organising some joint club events. Our next meeting will be our AGM in February.
